This image, taken from the gymnasium side of the iconic Foothill Footbridge, shows the bridge, Campus Center, campus loop road and Appreciation Hall under construction. The Los Altos Hills campus opened to the public in the Fall of 1961.
Workers place the iconic "hat" on top of a Foothill building during construction in 1960. The "hat" was both a visual feature and a functional one. Inside the "hat" were the heating and ventilation systems that are typically placed on rooftops in full view. This was used on all buildings at Foothill to hide the unsightly equipment from view.
